Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois is preparing to host the 23rd Annual Lincoln Colloquium on October 11, 2008. Leading Lincoln and Civil War scholars such as Allen Guelzo, James McPherson, Rodney Davis, Garry Wills, and Douglas Wilson will be presenting lectures at the colloquium. Another part of the colloquium will be an exhibit of Lincoln artifacts by collectors and organizations.
This year marks the sesqui-centennial of the famous Lincoln-Douglas debates, one of which took place on the campus of Knox College. It's "Old Main" building is the only surviving structure from the debate sites.
For more information, including the lectures which will be presented by the scholars, more information may be found here.
Geoff, Were you at the colloquium? Sorry I didn't get a chance to meet you. Great event, wasn't it? Ann Mueller

Hi Ann,
ReplyDeleteNo, I wasn't at the colloquium. I imagine the event was indeed quite good.
I've not begun attending any of these colloquia, symposiums, lectures, etc. I'm not a professional historian, teacher, writer, or anything of the kind. I would be a bit embarrassed to attend these events without professional credentials. While my knowledge of Lincoln is better than the average person's, I would be intimidated to be around the true giants of the field. Indeed, I would feel foolish!
I simply am a person fascinated by Lincoln and in my quest to help others learn about him, I'm learning as well.
Thanks for dropping by.
Geoff
Geoff,
ReplyDeleteI just tonight found your reply to my question. Please don't ever be embarrassed to attend a Lincoln event. The Lincoln scholarly community is truly one of the warmest, most encouraging groups of people I've ever met.
They do what they do because they are as fascinated by Lincoln as we are and they, too, are learning as they strive to help others learn.
I truly believe they appreciate what you do.
Hope your vacation was good. Take care.
Ann
