On March 25, 1863, Jacob was awarded the Medal of Honor by Secretary of War, Edwin Stanton, who then escorted him to the White House to meet & be congratulated by President Abraham Lincoln. (Jacob was awarded the Medal of Honor for having taken part in "Andrews Raid", the mission which penetrated almost 200 miles into enemy territory capturing the Confederate train, "The General", in an attempt to destroy bridges & railroad tracks between Chattanooga & Atlanta; plus, for his loyalty to the Union while imprisoned & having been tortured in 3 Confederate prisons.) I am writing to ask if, in all your research, you have come across a photo or sketch of President Lincoln with Jacob (shaking hands, sitting, etc.) --As a member of "Andrews Raiders", Jacob took part in "Andrews Raid" on 4/7/1862. --Jacob enlisted 4/20/1861 as a Private in the 20th Ohio Infantry, Company F (where he served for 3 months). He, then, re-enlisted 11/18/1861, into Company K, 33rd Ohio Infantry as a Private. -On 5/3/1863, he was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant. On 5/25/1864, he was commissioned to a 1st Lieutenant. Jacob mustered out of the Union Army 1/2/1865. -His Medal of Honor was returned by his family to the U.S. Congress 7/12/1990. It is now on display in "The Crypt" of the Rotunda at the Capitol Building in Washington, D.C.. (Following the awarding of the FIRST Medal of Honor to Jacob, Secretary Stanton awarded 5 other "Andrews Raiders" Medals of Honor, after which Stanton accompanied Jacob & the 5 other recipients to the White House to meet President Lincoln.) I too have heard rumors of a family member who was part of the honor guard. In my research, I have not been able to document this. David A. Shull enlisted and served in the Co. D 72nd Regiment of Indiana Volunteers. I July 1863 he was in the Invalid Corp, 8th Veterans Reserve Corp and supposedly part of the honor guard. Do you see him in any of your research?
Suesbreesehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15855676106028056166noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3831255577594231117.post-70036309863344449142013-02-17T20:51:41.164-05:002013-02-17T20:51:41.164-05:00Great blog

Mathew Brady is most famous for taking Lincoln's photos is life, sadly Jeremiah is most famous for taking taking Lincoln's photos is death.
TerryTerry Alphonsehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05594463141248000064noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3831255577594231117.post-16024693864645572042011-03-20T20:28:15.105-04:002011-03-20T20:28:15.105-04:00Hello Alex,

Unfortunately, I've not been able to find his name or even that the 2nd Wisconsin Volunteers were part of the troops which accompanied the Funeral Train.

That doesn't mean he didn't participate. It simply means that I can find nothing in my reference books or on the Internet.

I did find two different "Smiths" as part of the Honor Guard. These men were part of the Veterans Reserve Guard of Escort, men who had been chosen from the ranks of the injured corps. One was Frank T. Smith from the 5th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry. The other was John P. Smith, from the 119th Illinois Volunteer Infantry. But I could find nothing mentioning your ancestor, unfortunately.Geoff Elliotthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07861071117040254491noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3831255577594231117.post-92024162868758431302011-03-13T18:47:36.680-04:002011-03-13T18:47:36.680-04:00Hi Geoffrey,

A few years ago, I came across some papers written by one of my great aunts saying that my great-great-great grandfather was in President Lincoln's Honor Guard. The letter goes on to say that he got a rose and piece of fern from the bouquet sent by Queen Victoria and sent it home with a letter describing funeral, procession, etc. As of the 1940's, one of my ancestors still had the rose and fern, carefully preserved.

My soldier's name was Sergeant Major James Horton Smith, serving for the Union in the 2nd Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry. I know it's a long-shot, but would you happen to know if James H. Smith would be mentioned somewhere, regarding Lincoln's funeral?

Thanks!

-AlexAlexhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12268704066587428763noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3831255577594231117.post-72052828994106330022011-02-20T19:31:53.965-05:002011-02-20T19:31:53.965-05:00Yes.
